Wendy Jones (MA, BA), author of Choreographing the Curriculum, is a choreographer, dancer, and educator whose work centers on community, creativity, and reflection through dance. For over 25 years, she has led the Lowell High School Dance Program in San Francisco, building a four-tier curriculum grounded in collaboration, performance, and movement practice.
A passionate advocate for dance education, Jones mentors and supports teachers in designing the dance programs of their dreams. She works as a university supervisor for the University of San Francisco, guides new teachers through SFUSD mentorship programs, and shares her methods through workshops and professional collaborations across California. Jones earned her BA in Dance (Performance/Choreography and Education) from San Francisco State University and an MA in Dance from CSU, Long Beach. She began her training in Sacramento and expanded her studies through workshops in New York, Paris, and St. Louis with master teachers, including Katherine Dunham. She is also certified in Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process (CRP). |
Teaching
As a dance educator, every lesson can become a dance and every dance can become a lesson. My teaching balances rigor with creativity, combining technical training, choreography, and reflective practice to help students find their own voices. Guided by the principle Do what you know. Use what you have. Make what you need, I strive to create an inclusive environment where artistry, collaboration, and humanity thrive.
Choreography
I make work to tell the story of human emotions and the connections we have with the world. I make dances to understand life challenges and celebrations. I am curious about how movement can collide with real-life experiences, allowing us to understand them in a deeper way. The work usually begins with a question or experience, then once explored and studied with the dancers, we find the deeper and authentic explanations to the initial query.
